In many countries, birth registration is an obvious norm that follows childbirth. But in a huge number of countries, this crucial step to establish the legal proof of the children’s identity is missing. Even in Bangladesh, people do not emphasize birth registration much. What is Birth Certificate Registration?

The process through which a child’s birth is recorded is called ‘Birth Registration’. জন্ম নিবন্ধন হলো জন্ম ও মৃত্যু নিবন্ধন আইন, ২০০৪ (২০০৪ সনের ২৯ নং আইন) এর আওতায় একজন মানুষের নাম, লিঙ্গ, জন্মের তারিখ ও স্থান, বাবা-মায়ের নাম, তাদের জাতীয়তা এবং স্থায়ী ঠিকানা নির্ধারিত নিবন্ধক কর্তৃক রেজিস্টারে লেখা বা কম্পিউটারে এন্ট্রি প্রদান এবং জন্ম সনদ প্রদান করা।

Why Does Birth Registration Matter?

Birth registration BD is not only a basic human right but also helps to ensure that other rights of the children are upheld. There is no legal justification for children without birth certificates. So, they deprive of their fundamental right as well as other necessary services and benefits, even their employment.

Without birth registration, it will be very difficult to prevent Child marriage, underage labor, sexual assault, and criminal responsibility. We will continue to see news reports that say, rescued children from foreign human trafficker facing difficulties while returning home as they are unable to prove their nationality.

You will have to visit the ward commissioner, a local councilor, or chairman’s office on the given date with the hardcopy of the form that you submitted online along with original documents to collect your certificate.

Previously, Birth Registration Bd system was a little cumbersome and time-consuming. Because, you had to go through a number of steps, such as applying for the registration, submitting it to the local registrar, and then wait for a few days to receive your Birth registration certificate.

To address the issue, the Bangladesh Government launched the system, so that you can register birth online in October 2010. Bangladeshi passport holders living in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau are also able to apply for birth registration in Bangladesh.

বিভাগ, জেলা প্রভৃতি ধাপ পার হয়ে ওয়ার্ড পর্যন্ত নির্বাচন করার পর স্ক্রিনে একটি অনলাইন ফরম আসবে। অনলাইন জন্ম নিবন্ধনের আবেদন ফরম প্রথমে বাংলায় (ইউনিকোড) ও পরবর্তীতে ইংরেজিতে পূরণের পর প্রয়োজনীয় সম্পাদনা করে সংরক্ষণ বাটনে ক্লিক করতে হবে। সংরক্ষণ বাটনে ক্লিক করলেই আবেদন পত্রটি সংশ্লিষ্ট নিবন্ধক কার্যালয়ে স্থানান্তরিত হয়ে যাবে, আবেদনকারীর আর কোনো সংশোধনের সুযোগ থাকবে না। এরপর পরবর্তী ধাপে প্রিন্ট বাটনে ক্লিক করলে আবেদন পত্রের মুদ্রিত কপি পাওয়া যাবে। সনদের জন্য ১৫ দিনের মধ্যে উক্ত আবেদনপত্রের মুদ্রিত কপি ও প্রযোজ্য ক্ষেত্রে প্রয়োজনীয় প্রমাণপত্রের সত্যায়িত কপিসহ নিবন্ধক অফিসে যোগাযোগ করতে হবে।

Below are the documents needed for birth registration:

• Bangladesh National Id card copy (if any)
• Copies of Bangladesh passport database page of the applicant.
• Copies of parents’ passport database page, if an applicant is a child.
• Applicant’s white background passport size (55mmx45mm) photo with the printed copy of the birth application form.
• Hong Kong/ Taiwan or Macau identity card copy.
