Government Medical College List. Bangladesh has 37 government medical colleges offering a total of 5,100 MBBS seats. Admission to all of them runs through a single national admission test conducted by the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and every college must be recognised by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC).

This page lists every government medical college by division, with its seat count and location, and explains how the seats changed this session.

How many government medical colleges are there in Bangladesh?

There are 37 government medical colleges. Alongside them there are private medical colleges, and a separate group of medical colleges run by the Bangladesh Armed Forces under the Ministry of Defence.

The oldest is Dhaka Medical College, established in 1946, followed by Chattogram Medical College (1957) and Rajshahi Medical College (1958). Mymensingh Medical College and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College both date from 1962.

Total MBBS seats in government medical colleges

5,100 seats across 37 colleges for the 2025–26 session.

That is 280 fewer than the 5,380 seats available the year before. The Ministry of Health sent the reorganisation letter to the Directorate General of Medical Education on 10 November 2025, and the admission circular followed.

What changed and why

Fourteen colleges lost a combined 355 seats. Three gained 75 between them.

The nine oldest and largest colleges each came down to 225 seats:

The Directorate General of Medical Education has described this as an adjustment rather than a cut. Its Additional Director General for Medical Education, Professor Dr Rubina Yasmin, said 1,030 seats had been added suddenly in 2022 without matching improvements to buildings and lecture galleries, and that the current figures bring intake back into line with what each campus can actually seat.

Others in the sector have raised a concern worth knowing about: 205 of the lost seats came from nine of the country’s oldest and strongest colleges, which is where students without money for private tuition have the best chance of a high-quality medical education.

AFMC is counted as a public medical college but sits outside the Directorate General of Medical Education’s list of 37, and its admission is handled separately. Established in 1999, it is affiliated with Bangladesh University of Professionals rather than a general public university, and its graduates are commissioned into the Army Medical Corps.

Including AFMC, Bangladesh has 38 public medical colleges with 5,225 MBBS seats.

How admission to a government medical college works

Every government medical college in the country fills its seats from one national merit list. There is no separate application to an individual college.

1. The circular. DGME publishes the MBBS admission circular on dgme.gov.bd and dghs.gov.bd. Govt Medical Admission Circular 2026
2. Application. Online at dgme.teletalk.com.bd, with your SSC and HSC details, a scanned photo and signature
3. Admit card. Downloaded from the same portal with the user ID and password issued at application
4. The test. One MCQ paper covering Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English. Applicants sitting the test for a second time have marks deducted from their total
5. Merit list. Built from the admission test score combined with SSC and HSC GPA
6. Choice and placement. Your college is decided by merit position and the choices you listed
7. Migration. Published after the first placement, moving students up their own choice lists as seats free up

The pass mark and the government-college cut-off are not the same thing. The pass mark is fixed, but the merit position that actually secures a government seat depends on how many people sat the test that year and how they scored. In practice it sits far above the pass mark.

Dental (BDS) seats

BDS admission runs on a separate test from MBBS and has done since the 2016–17 session. Public BDS seats sit in three government dental colleges and in dental units attached to medical colleges — 545 seats in total.
