Dengue is characterised by sustained high-grade fever, pain around, inside or behind the eyes, nausea and vomiting, abdominal discomfort, Diarrhea, muscle aches and measles-like red rashes all over the body. There are two types of dengue – classic dengue and dengue hemorrhagic. In the first type of dengue recovery is most likely to occur more quickly. But in the second type a decrease in platelet count can result in bleeding, organ failure, and even death. There are no vaccines against dengue. That’s why prevention is crucial. The vector “Adis” mosquito breeds in stagnant fresh water and rainwater. So we must be vigilant in keeping our household areas clean. We must not allow water to stagnate in flowerpots, vases, tyres and puddles. Besides, we must protect ourselves from mosquito-bites.
