The University Grants Commission or UGC has decided to provide interest-free loans or UGC scholarship 2022 to a large number of students. Students will use this money to purchase a smart phone to continue their online study in this corona virus situation. Students will be able to repay the actual money in four installments or one time after the opening of the university or during the study.
What is UGC Scholarship?
UGC scholarship is such a scholarship that is offered by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. A total of Tk. 8,000 will be provided to 41,501 indigent students of 39 government and private universities in the country to buy a smart phone to participate in online classes during this lockdown situation.
Decision of UGC Scholarship
The decision was taken at a meeting of the UGC a few days ago. The virtual meeting was held under the chairmanship of UGC Chairman Professor Kazi Shahidullah. Other concerned officials including other members of UGC also were present at the meeting.
Behind the Scene of UGC Scholarship
Government has closed all educational institutions in the country since March 16 due to corona virus pandemic. According to the latest announcement of the government, there will be a holiday till the end of the year. Because of this uncertain situation, UGC had a meeting on June 25with different universities and decided to take online classes. Then, from July, online classes officially started in government and private universities of the country.
But after the class starts, the teachers see that almost half of the students in the department are not participating in the online class. It was learned from the opinion by the teachers and students; a large number of the students are not attending the classes mainly due to not having smart phones and internet access. There is also disinterest in many. Apart from this, many students in remote areas are unable to attend online classes due to internet connection problems.
UGC Scholarship Eligibility
Who will Get UGC Scholarship ? In such a situation described above, UGC takes initiative to give it to the students who cannot afford the device and internet. The UGC urged to the authority of different universities to provide an accurate list of students who could not afford to buy the device and have no internet access.
The universities then sent a list of 41,501 students to the UGC. In the first list, the universities said that on average; about 29 percent of students did not have this facility. Later, considering the urgent need, the UGC asked to revise the list to 15 percent. Universities later send revised lists.
According to UGC sources, students of Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET), Chittagong University, Jahangirnagar University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Jagannath University, Bangladesh Textile University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Sheikh Hasina University in Netrokona, and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib University of Science and Technology will get the UGC scholarship.

Students applying for scholarship for the first time need to “Register” on the portal as fresh applicant by providing accurate and authenticated information as printed on their documents in the “Student Registration Form”. Students who are on the first list are getting UGC scholarship initially. After this, a second list will be prepared and a lot more students will get scholarship to purchase a smart phone. Undoubtedly, this is a great initiative by the UGC authority.
