On May 14, National Chicken Dance Day, people celebrate our favorite moments doing the well-known Chicken Dance. Everyone has performed the Chicken Dance, whether it was in primary school or at a gathering last week. Although the oompah song that accompanied the dance was created in Switzerland in the 1950s, it wasn’t until the 1970s that Americans became familiar with it and it began to gain popularity. Today, turn on the tune and dance to the Chicken Dance with the children in your life!
History of National Chicken Dance Day
Werner Thomas, a teenage Swiss accordionist, is recognized as the author of the original version of “The Chicken Dance song,” which is now nearly a global cultural phenomenon. He was just in his 20s when he composed the popular song on his Swiss accordion in the late 1950s. We can only presume that the song’s original title, “Der Ententanz,” or “The Duck Dance,” came about because the composer looked after a herd of ducks and geese. Some claim that it was composed for Oktoberfest and based on a well-known German drinking song.
Belgian music producer Louis Van Rymenant added lyrics to Thomas’ song after hearing it in a resort and then made it available to the public. Naturally, it took off. By the 1970s, “The Duck Dance,” along with the distinctive dance steps, had become popular in America. September Music Corporation purchased the rights in the US and altered the song’s name to “Dance Little Bird.” The song’s publisher, Stanley Mills, attempted to include English lyrics, but they were never successful.
