On May 1, people all across the world observe International Workers’ Day, sometimes referred to as International Labour Day. The day is set aside to honor laborers and employees across all fields and professions. The purpose of the day is to educate workers about their rights as well as to recognize the contributions that they have made. Labor Day is celebrated as a national holiday in several nations, and many organizations sponsor unique initiatives aimed at improving working conditions.
History of International Labour Day
In May 1886, 400,000 workers across the USA went on strike to demand an eight-hour workweek. Despite the peaceful start to the strike, there was considerable violence on the third day of protests in Chicago. When the police opened fire on them, many of the defenseless employees were slain.
The next day, there were additional protests and a bomb was hurled. Seven police officers and four workers were killed by the device or by police shooting immediately after the explosion. Although eight employees were caught, the bomber’s identity remained a mystery. Seven of them were given death sentences, while one was given a 15-year prison sentence.
May 1 was chosen to commemorate International Workers’ Day because the Haymarket Affair came to represent the global fight for workers’ rights. Workers were encouraged to protest on this day in support of the eight-hour workday and in favor of nonviolent protest by socialist parties and labor unions.
In the USA, public employees were given the right to an eight-hour workweek in 1892. Since then, this right has been fought for and achieved by workers’ movements all over the world.
