Every year on May 5, people commemorate National Cartoonist Day. It is the day for you if the comic strips in the newspaper interest you more than the news. This holiday commemorates the publication of the first comic strip in a newspaper; more on that later. Additionally, it pays tribute to all cartoonists, past and present, and their incredible works.
National Cartoonists Day History
A young child with a bald head and a yellow nightshirt was first published in the New York World, which was wildly famous at the time in the big apple, by a man by the name of Richard F. Outcault. When compared to the yellow kid, the newspaper itself was treated with a certain amount of derision by’real’ journalists of the era.
Richard had no idea that when he first developed this character, it would revolutionize the way stories were delivered and presented in sequential art works and would establish a new standard for newspaper content worldwide.
The Katzenjammer Kids, which first appeared in the American Humorist in 1897 and has since changed hands three times, is currently the longest-running newspaper cartoon in history. Speech balloons were standardized as the way cartoonists signaled dialogue by the early 1900s, and they are still used today. The original cartoonist of the comic, Rudolph Dirks, was one of the first to do so consistently.

We are inspired and taken away from reality by the imaginative and innovative tale that pops off the page. Our lives have improved thanks to cartoonists.
