National Boba Day is a holiday celebrated on April 30th every year. However, the consumers of Boba tea have not been celebrating the day, not for a long time. The lovers of Boba Tea started to celebrate it only four years ago, in 2018. On this day, April 30th, the special drink is consumed all across the U.S.
What is Boba?
What is Boba? Boba tea is a kind of beverage made in Taiwan in the 1980s. The beverage has a variety of other names, such as bubble tea, Boba tea, boba milk tea, or pearl milk tea. This traditional milk tea is made of black tea, milk, and boba pearls, which come from the cassava root, which is later turned into tapioca starch. Boba tea may have a variety of other ingredients, too, to increase the taste, such as agar, aloe vera, sugar, ice, fruit flavors, fruit jelly, and tapioca balls.
History
We have already read about the origin of Boba tea. It was produced in Taiwan around the 1980s. But this drink is introduced to the U.S. for the first time in the 1990s. Because of the adoration, the beverage grew explosively in the mid-2000s. An international chain of boba shops tried to promote this versatile drink, boba tea and succeeded. As a result, National Boba Day was founded in 2018.
According to a survey on consumer shopping habits related to boba conducted in March 2024, around 74% of respondents are familiar with Boba tea. From that group, we also know that nearly 91% of them drink boba once a month, and nearly 63% consume it once a week.
