History of Mother’s Day

A review of the history of the World Mother’s Day reveals that there are several myths. Among the groups, this day originated from the practice of mother worship in ancient Greece, where it was a festival dedicated to Sibel, a prominent goddess among the Greek gods.

The “Mother’s Day Proclamation” by Julia Ward Hoey is one of the earliest efforts to celebrate Mother’s Day in the United States. Hoey’s Mother’s Day Proclamation, which was published in 1870, was a pacifist response to the horrors of both the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. Hoi’s feminist belief that women have a role in shaping society at the political level was implicit in the Declaration.

According to some other sources, Mother’s Day was introduced by Juliet Calhoun Blakely in Albion, Michigan, USA in the first decade of the 18th century. The sons would honor her every year and ask others to honor mothers as well..

Significance of Mother’s Day

Conceiving a child for nine months, nurturing it, loving it selflessly and giving birth is an experience that no other human on earth can explain in words. A mother forms a strong bond with her child as soon as she learns about her existence. Even after the umbilical cord is torn, this bond grows stronger by the day. A child does not have to say, I love you, mother, or a mother to show her feelings to her children.

It is unspoken and always in the back of the mind. Celebrating Mother’s Day is just one way to celebrate the essence of motherhood. Children can never repay the debt of their mothers, who work hard to raise and make their children independent. Celebrating this day is just a way to enjoy the eternal bond of affection, love and care for each other.

Mother’s Day in Different Countries

Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in Australia, Canada or the United States. In the UK the day is celebrated just three weeks before Easter Sunday. In these countries, schools and workplaces are usually not open on Sundays.

Some countries have a holiday on Mother’s Day. For example, Costa Rica celebrates Mother’s Day on August 15. That day is a national holiday. Mother’s Day is on March 3 in Georgia, the second week of May in Samoa, and August 12 in Thailand. Restaurants in these countries are crowded during the days.
