Every year on May 16, the United States commemorates National Barbecue Day. Americans across the country enjoy a variety of scrumptious barbeque (BBQ) tastes and sauces, whether they grill at home or order takeaway.
National Barbecue Day: History
Digging a hole, laying meat over a pot, and covering the hole with leaves were all traditional barbeque methods. The beef was slow-cooked, with the juices collected in the saucepan and later used as a broth.
We can trace Barbeque back to early Caribbean cultures and find the first historical mention of barbeque on the island of Hispaniola.
There is evidence that Christopher Columbus saw indigenous Hispaniolan tribes preparing meat over an open fire. Years later, after interactions with the natives, Spanish explorers named the process barbacoa or barbeque.
Explorer Hernando De Soto photographed the Chickasaw tribe roasting pigs on the barbacoa in 1540.
It’s unclear whether the Chickasaw taught settlers how to cook this way or if settlers began to imitate the Chickasaw’s manner. However, at some point, settlers began cooking meat over an open fire. As a result, barbeque became the typical method of grilling that we know today.
The National Barbecue Day Celebration
Grillers choose how they want their barbecue. They consider themselves barbeque experts, regardless of whether they use charcoal, wood charcoal, wood, gas, or slow cooking. Traditionally, there are four sorts of BBQ regions in the United States:
- Kansas: A tomato and molasses-based sauce are used to slow cook a range of beef and hog cuts.
- Carolina: Slow-roasted pork is cooked in a sauce made with a vinegar-ketchup base.
- Memphis: Pork with a dry rub is cooked low and slow to acquire the smokey BBQ characteristics.
- Texas: Slow-cooked beef is covered with a smokey dry rub and barbecued on smoker grills.
