Dame Sheila Cameron Hancock DBE (born 22 February 1933) is an English actress, singer and writer. She acted in theater in London – plays and musicals, and her Broadway debut in Entertaining Mr. Sloane (1966) earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Play. She later moved to King’s Cross, London, where her mother and father ran a pub. Sheila went to Dartford Grammar School and then went to RADA on a grant. She then went on to report weekly across the country for nine years.
Working Life
Hancock worked in repertory in the 1950s and made her West End debut in 1958, replacing Joan Sims in the play Breath of Spring. She then appeared in Joan Littlewood’s Theater Workshop production of Make Me An Offer in 1959. His other early West End appearances included Peter Cook’s revue One Over the Eight with Kenneth Williams in 1961 and Rattle of a Simple Man in 1962.Hancock Also presented several documentaries. In 2010, she presented Suffragette City (part of A History of the World series), which tells the story of the suffragette movement through objects from London museums.
In 2011, she presented Sheila Hancock Brushes Up: The Art of Watercolor, exploring the history of watercolor through the beautiful yet little-known works of professional and amateur artists. She presented, as part of the ITV Perspectives documentary series, Perspectives: Sheila Hancock – The Brilliant Brontë Sisters, examining the writers’ upbringing and sources of inspiration. While at the Bath Repertory, she met the actor Alec Ross, whom she married in 1955.and on July 15, 1964, gave birth to Melanie Thaw.

Sheila traveled the United Kingdom in the 1980s with both the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.In 1988 she was told she had breast cancer, but she fought it and won. During this period she and Thao split briefly. In the early 1990s Sheila and John Lackington bought a house in Wiltshire and a farmhouse in Provence, France. In 2001 John was told he had cancer. For nine months he fought against it and with Sheela’s help his secret was saved.The day before he turned sixty-nine, John went away in Sheila’s arms. Since her death, Sheila has written a book called “The Two of Us: My Life with John Thaw” and has made numerous TV and stage appearances to talk about the novel and her relationship with John.
