Henry Ford’s Professional Life
Ford joined the Edison Lighting Company of Detroit as an engineer in 1891. He had ample time and money after his elevation to Chief Engineer in 1893 to focus on his gasoline engine research. These efforts culminated in 1896 with the development of the Ford Quadricycle, a self-propelled vehicle. On June 4, he gave it a test drive
Ford discussed ideas to enhance the Quadricycle after many test drives. Henry Ford was fascinated with mechanics from an early age. By the age of 12, he was spending the most of his free time in a tiny machine shop he had set up. He built his first steam engine there when he was 15 years old
Later, he worked as a machinist’s apprentice in Detroit, at James F. Flower and Brothers’ shops and the Detroit Dry Dock Company’s facility. He spent a year in southern Michigan after finishing his training in 1882, building up and maintaining Westinghouse steam engines.
