He is the child of Punjabi descendant father Roy Kapoor and Jewish descendant mother Salome Roy Kapoor.He is the youngest of his three brothers. The oldest brother of him is Siddharth Roy Kapoor who is a noted film director in bollywood and also former husband of renowned actress Vidya Balan. He is also the CEO of UTV motion pictures, a production house. His other older brotherKunaal Roy Kapoor is also an actor.

He completed his high school from G.D Somani Memorial School in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai. Then he went to St. Xavier’s college. He dreamt of becoming a cricketer in school but he left the cricket coaching class in sixth grade. He has said he never had intentions to become actor, but eventually became one.
