Yemi Mary John is a British track and field athlete. Back and bigger than ever after a three-year absence to celebrate Britain’s brightest sporting prospects – and Yemi Mary admits her successful season has boosted her confidence significantly. She won the gold medal in the 400m at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships.
The 19-year-old led her semi-final from the start, crossing the line with a gap of five meters and a personal best time of 51.72 seconds. The build-up was less than ideal, with torrential rain causing the competition to run two hours behind schedule. The weather provided a huge challenge and learning experience for the GB and NI teenagers, many of whom competed in the final as the skies opened up with thunder and lightning.

John graduated from London, England’s Trinity Catholic High School in 2021.She then spent a year at Nottingham University, but they didn’t have a track team, so she didn’t compete.With a PR of 51.50, John took home the gold medal in the 400 meters at the World Athletics U20 Championships held in Colombia.

Yemi Marie John ran a new personal best to finish runner-up in the 400 m at the 2021 European Under-20 Championships in Tallinn. She was a member of the British 4 × 400 m relay team that finished fifth at the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
John emerged victorious in the 2024 World U20 Championships 400m event in Cali, Colombia as he lowered his personal best throughout the round to win the final in 51.50 seconds,the second-fastest time ever set by an under-20 British athlete. 51.16 seconds from Lynsey McDonald’s 1980. She later won bronze in the 4x400m relay race at the event.
Competing at the July 2024 British Athletics Championships in Manchester, England, she reached the final of the women’s 400 m and finished in 3rd place. She was selected as part of the Great Britain team for the 2024 European Athletics U23 Championships to be held from July 2024 in Espoo, Finland. Yemi Mary John won the gold medal in the 400m event, with compatriot Kiley Hodgkinson third.

In August 2024, she was chosen to compete for Great Britain in Budapest during the 2024 World Athletics Championships.Running the anchor leg of the mixed 4 x 400-meter relay, she capitalized on a late, dramatic fall at the Netherlands’ Femme Bowl to win world silver, her first senior representative medal. A week later, she won a bronze medal in the women’s 4 x 400m relay.
