Freddie Funk was born in 1939 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and raised in Taos. A variety store was her family’s business. The artists of the Taos art colony would swap their work in exchange for repayment of their store debt, so the family amassed a collection of their work. Funk was enthralled by planes as a child. While living in New Mexico, her parents took their one-year-old daughter to an airfield near their home to see a Douglas DC-3, an early airplane.

Funk became a licensed pilot when he was just 20 years old. When she first started working, she was a Civilian Flight Instructor for the United States Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. At a US military base, Funk was the first female flying instructor. By completing FAA’s General Aviation Operations Inspector Academy training, Funk made history as the first woman to pass the FAA’s Pilot Certification and Flight Testing procedures, as well as the management of accidents and violations.

She was the first woman to work as a field examiner for the FAA for four years. When the “Women in Space” program was launched in February 1961, Funk volunteered. A Goodwill Ambassador after Mercury 13 was canceled, Funk now works with the United Nations.
