Freddie Funk was born in 1939 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and raised in Taos. A variety store was her family’s business. Funk became a licensed pilot when he was just 20 years old. When she first started working, she was a Civilian Flight Instructor for the United States Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. At a US military base, Funk was the first female flying instructor. By completing FAA’s General Aviation Operations Inspector Academy training, Funk made history as the first woman to pass the FAA’s Pilot Certification and Flight Testing procedures, as well as the management of accidents and violations.
