July 25 is St. James the Great Day. Brother of the Apostle John, St. Jame the Great was the son of Zebedee and Salome. St. James is the patron saint of both Galicia and Spain, therefore it seems sense that this day is also known as Galicia Day. According to legend, his remains are kept in Spain’s Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia. A Camino Holy Year, also known as the Year of Compostela or Jacobean Year, is declared the year after St. James the Great’s Day falls on a Sunday. Devotees are eligible for a plenary indulgence throughout these years.

History of St. James The Great Day:
The sons of Zebedee, James and John, were called by Jesus to abandon everything and follow him, according to the Bible. They may have earned the moniker “sons of thunder” from Jesus due to their extreme excitement or temperament.
One of the three apostles who was very close to Jesus, along with Peter and John, was James. James the Lesser, the other apostle who was possibly smaller or younger, is distinguished from him by the title “the Greater.”
The first apostle to perish was James, who was executed in Jerusalem by Herod Agrippa around the year 44 AD. James was one of the twelve apostles. According to some legends, James preached in Spain right before he passed away, while according to others, his relics were transported there. Later, St. James the Great’s relics were transported to the Iberian Peninsula (present-day Galicia in Spain) by his disciples. They are thought to be interred in Compostela.
According to legends, his body was transported to the Iberian Peninsula on a sailless ship with no rudder. They arrived on the peninsula’s northwest coast and proceeded to Iria Flavia by way of the Ulla River (modern-day Padron). When James’ companions pleaded with the Celtic Queen Lupia for permission to bury him there, she refused and sent warriors after them. The bridge crumbled, killing her soldiers as these warriors pursued James’ followers across it while carrying his body!
St. James the Great is also the patron saint of Spain, where Santiago de Compostela has been a well-known pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages, as well as other Latin American countries, laborers, travelers, and people with rheumatism.
Why Celebrate St. James The Great Day?
This day serves as a reminder to offer prayers to St. James the Great. St. James the Great is frequently seen as a pilgrim carrying a book, a gourd, and a scallop shell on prayer and novena cards. He is occasionally seen in religious art galloping into battle on a white horse, crushing foes beneath him. We must ask for his intercession if we are to win the spiritual battle.
Every religious celebration or holiday brings people together. Catholics typically attend mass on this day and spend time with their loved ones. The day of the saint’s celebration serves as a reminder to do both material and spiritual acts of mercy as well as to abstain from sin. It is a chance for Christians and Catholics to proclaim Christ.
How to Celebrate St. James The Great Day?
Attend special services in church
Special services are held at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on the day of the saint’s feast. A large incense burner is whirled rapidly by a priest as part of a rite. The incense smoke and woodsy odor permeate the entire chapel.
Visit souvenir shops in Santiago
You can buy trinkets featuring a scallop shell if you’re anywhere near Santiago de Compostela. According to one of the various traditions, it was carried by medieval pilgrims as they made their way to Santiago de Compostela. It is used as a bowl for water and food. The scallop’s grooves also represent the various pilgrimage pathways coming together at a certain place.
Make an altar
Place an altar in front of your home. A picture of St. James, a crucifix, a miniature figure of the Blessed Virgin, flowers in a small vase, and a candle should all be placed on your altar table. Invite your neighbors and friends to recite a prayer, followed by a “Our Father” and a “Hail Mary,”. Also ask “for the strength to fight the good fight to be worthy disciples of Christ.”
