Saint Vladimir Day is a holy feast that is commemorated by the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church. Also the Anglican Church, and the Lutheran Church every year in July. It honors the birth of Saint Vladimir I, who was the illegitimate child of Kyiv Grand Duke Sviatoslav and his mistress Malushka and the grandson of Saint Olga.

When is Saint Vladimir Day?
This year Saint Vladimir Day is on July 15 (Monday), 2024. Also known as Vladimir The Great, he was the ruler of Kievan Rus from 980 through 1015 and was the Grand Prince of Kiev and the Prince of Novgorod. Although he originally believed in Slavic paganism, he converted to Christianity in 988 and ended up Christianizing Kievan Rus’. The 13th century would see the canonization of this person.
Although Christianity had made some progress in Kiev, Vladimir continued to be agnostic, had seven wives, established monasteries. Also he was interested in elaborate rites, maybe involving human penance. Byzantine Emperor Basil II requested military advice from Vladimir in the year 987. The two came to an agreement in exchange for assistance, which included Vladimir becoming a Christian and getting married to Basil’s sister Anne. He received cleansing through water, adopted the name Basil, and then asked for Kiev and Novgorod to become Christian cities. The Dnieper River was filled with icons, and the new Rus Christians adopted the Byzantine rite in Old Church Slavonic.
Who was St. Vladimir?
Sviatoslav I of Kiev and his servant Malusha welcomed him into the world in 958. Malusha, however, served as more than just a housekeeper in the Norse Sagas. She was a prophetess who was taken to the palace from her cave in order to foretell the future. Dobrynya, her brother, served as Vladimir’s mentor and trusted confidant. This story, nevertheless, raises some red flags because some of it could not be accurate.
Although Kieve was promised to Yaropolk, Sviatoslav’s rightful son, Vladimir was named king of Novgorod by his father. War broke out between Yaropolk and his younger brother Oleg in 972. Followed Sviatoslave’s death at the hands of the Pechenegs. In order to retake Novgorod in 977, Vladimir escaped to Haakon Sigurdsson, the king of Norway. Also gathered as many Norse troops as he could. He protested at Yaropolk the following year.
Vladimir appealed for the hand of his daughter Princess Rogneda while en route to Kyiv by sending diplomats to the Prince of Polotsk, Prince Rogvolod. The princess, who was already wed to Yaropolk, declined to get married to the son of a bondswoman. Vladimir attacked Polotsk at this time, killed Prince Pogvolod, and abducted Rogneda against her will, killing her parents in the process. Due to Polotsk’s importance as a strategic castle on the route to Kiev, it made it easier to capture the city in 978. He betrayed Yaropolk there, killing him, and was afterwards named Knyaz of Kievan Rus.
