Clayton and Todd were their two children.In 1968, Peterson enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where he served throughout the Vietnam War. After a car accident left him permanently disabled in 1971, he was given an honorable discharge with the rank of captain.
In 1999, when Peterson ran for mayor of Durham, he said he had been awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star for valor and two Purple Hearts. He had all the medals, but said he didn’t have the papers to go with them. Peterson said he received a Purple Heart when another soldier stepped on a land mine and another was hit by a knife after being shot.
He later claimed that his combat wounds were not caused by knife wounds in Vietnam, but rather a car accident in Japan, where he was stationed as a military police officer after the war ,The News and Observer reported that Peterson’s claim of receiving two Purple Hearts was not backed up by any records.
