Kshama Sawant is an Indian-American politician and an economist who has served on the Seattle City Council since 2014. After emigrating to the United States from his native India, Sawant, a former software engineer, started teaching economics in Seattle. He then ran unsuccessfully for the Washington House of Representatives in 2012 before winning his seat on the Seattle City Council in 2013. When Anna Louise Strong was elected to the school board in Seattle earlier that year, she became the first socialist to win a citywide election in that city. Sawant narrowly escaped a recall election for his seat on the council on December 7, 2021 by a margin of about 310 votes, or 0.76%. Then it was first held in Seattle since 1975.
In January 2025, Sawant announced that he would not seek re-election and would instead promote the Socialist Alternative Campaign Workers Strike Back to unite workers.

Early life
HT and Bashundhara Ramanujam were born to a middle-class Tamil family in Pune, India. Sawant grew up mostly in Mumbai. Also, his mother was a retired principal and his father was a civil engineer.
Sawant earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Mumbai in 1994, and after she moved to the United States with her husband Vivek Sawant, a Microsoft software engineer, she decided to focus on economics after working as a programmer for a year and a half. After moving to Seattle, he taught at Seattle University and the University of Washington Tacoma, and was an adjunct professor at Seattle Central College. But he was also a visiting assistant professor at Lee University in Washington and Lexington, Virginia.

Sawant has always indicated that his beginnings as a socialist began in India, a country plagued by extreme poverty.
