Joshua Cheptegi was born on 12 September 1996 in Kapsewi, Kapchorwa District, Uganda. His father’s name is Stephenson Kawalya Muneria, and his mother is Nadna Wakawa. Joshua Cheptegi belongs to the ‘Sabini’ tribe, who are mainly found on the slopes of Mount Elgon.
The Sabini tribe is a sub-tribe of the Kalenjins who mainly live in large parts of western Kenya and are known to produce some of the best athletes in the world.
