I couldn’t contain my tears when my family finally saw them and I learned that a lot of people had taken to the streets to support me.” The ‘controversial’ song was released a week later, and Hannan was arrested on July 25.
Reflecting on the incident, he described how police picked him up while he was returning home from a relative’s funeral in the Bhanghar area of Fatullah. The music and a video of the police chasing and shooting demonstrators were discovered after the police took his phone without his consent. “After saying, ‘We have him,’ one of the officers led me to the police station. They told me that after being questioned, I would be freed,” Hannan remarked.

Artists at Risk Connection, a New York-based group dedicated to helping affected artists, called on Thursday for the immediate release of musician and rapper Hannan Hossain Shimul, who was arrested in Narayanganj on July 25. But Hannan’s ordeal is not over. Without telling his family, he was held at the police station from noon till the following day. When his family was finally informed, they were asked to pay Tk 100,000 in exchange for his release without any charges. Later, the demand was increased to an additional Tk 20,000 due to “complications with higher-ups.”
The police finally demanded Tk 150,000 to release him from the station, but Hannan Before his family could bring the money back, he was hauled to court. Before being moved, he was held at the station for 39 hours. Hannan found out in court that he was accused of arson and vandalism. The judge only allowed the police two days of remand, despite their request for a seven-day one. Thankfully, Hannan was not physically tortured when he was placed on remand on the fifth day of his incarceration.
