Fred began breakdancing after seeing the 1984 film “Beat Street,” and he went by the stage name Magic. After seeing the film “Krush Groove” in late 1985, Fredro Starr decided to become a street poet (1985). He was influenced by LL Cool J’s style. Fred began working at the “Nu Tribe Barbershop” on Jamaica Avenue in Queens in 1986. After moving from Brooklyn to Queens, his younger cousin Kirk Jones followed him as a barber three years later.
Fred had to cut local drug dealers from the Supreme Team (gang), as well as celebrities like Kool G Rap, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and others, at “Nu Tribe Barbershop.” Fredro Starr formed the rap trio Onyx with his classmates Big DS and Suavé in 1988, after graduating from high school at the age of 17.
