Here are the qualifications required for burial:
All members of the armed forces are eligible to be buried at a national cemetery as long as they’ve fulfilled the necessary active duty and service requirements and have been released under conditions other than dishonorable.
Spouses, widows or minors of a veteran other than a member of the armed forces may also be eligible for burial, as well as dependent children and, under certain conditions, unmarried adult disabled children. Eligible spouses or their children may also be buried even if they predeceased the veteran.
Also included are members of the reserve component of the armed forces who die while on active duty or who die while on training duty. Or those eligible for retired pay may also be eligible for burial here.
Fort Snelling National Cemetery is home to the National Cemetery Administration’s first all-volunteer Memorial Rifle Squad (MRS) for short. Upon request they or these MRS will perform funeral services for 17 veterans from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm daily.
Honors at funerals of military personnel:
Department of Defense military funeral honors may be awarded upon request. At the lowest, a Department of Defense or military funeral honors ceremony involves the playing of “taps” in addition to the two men wearing uniforms and elaborate folds and flag presentations.
These “taps” are either a formal bugle or played via electronic recording (CD or tape). Please schedule a military funeral by contacting the following:

- Also forbidden to plant flowers, shrubs, potted plants etc.
- Smaller US or POW/MIA and Medal of Honor cemetery flags are permitted in addition to US Armed Forces branches.
