Early Life and Education
Katzberg started throwing the hammer at age 14 after watching his father coach his sister in events, thinking it was fun. He initially trained at the Nanaimo Track and Field Club. After high school he moved to Kamloops to be trained by new coach Dylan Armstrong, a former Olympic shot put medalist.
Armstrong then said of the new talent that “he was a skinny basketball player when I got him. What really stuck out, obviously, was his height and speed. It’s a rare combination. He’s fast, tall, co-hard to find. Ordained people who may have some interest in throwing—they all go to basketball, football, or other sports.
Making her major international tournament debut at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships, Katzberg qualified for the hammer throw final but finished last without a valid throw.In the hammer throw competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he took home a silver medal.
Competing in his first world championships at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Katzberg’s victory made him both the youngest men’s hammer throw medalist and the first Canadian male to win a world championship and medal in the event.
His victory ended the reign of five-time world champion Pawel Fajdek, who finished fourth, while also defeating reigning Olympic champion Wojciech Nowicki. Katzberg was part of the Canadian sweep of the hammer event in Budapest with Camryn Rogers winning the women’s event.
